Male-dominated fields saw hiring slowdowns during the pandemic.

But the impact on female-dominated industries has been staggering.

Sectors like beauty and weddings felt a major hit due to restrictions.

This shift may be why more women are now exploring careers as couriers.

Leading The Way In Gender Representation

This week, Scotland set an example in pushing for gender equality in transport.

M&H Carriers, a Scottish transport company, is working to improve gender representation.

Even though women make up 47% of the UK workforce, only 20% work in transport.

But M&H Carriers aims to change that.

Women hold over half of the senior roles at the company.

Their goal?

To break down stereotypes of transport as a male-only field.

They hope more women will begin to see it as a viable career.

The Arts Moving Into Transport

The Arts industry also faced huge setbacks due to Covid-19.

Many artists turned to the delivery industry, stepping into key worker roles.

For example, a trombonist took a job at Yodel.

She spoke of the respect she gained for delivery drivers’ hard work.

A violinist also joined the industry, delivering for Waitrose.

Despite qualifying for government grants, she couldn’t sit idle.

Her new role helped her stay motivated, and she even volunteered at a charity shop on weekends.

Delivery Work: Challenging But Rewarding

The demands have only grown over the past year and show no signs of slowing.

White Van Man Goes Green

News this week is that the typical white van man of all the social stereotypes is seemingly a thing of the past.

Replaced by a newer, greener van man (or woman) of the future.

It seems that a huge 91% of you believe that we should all be as environmentally friendly as possible.

Two-thirds of you support government initiatives for fewer vehicle emissions on the roads.

A huge 84% of you think companies should be running environmentally-friendly vehicles.

And 35% of you are considering an electric van when the time comes to upgrade your motor. 

The survey, commissioned by Fiat, to launch its new electric van the E-Ducato,

also found that many of you are not as beloved of the beer and fry-up’s diet as stereotypes may suggest.

In fact, one in five van drivers are either vegetarian or vegan,

and most prefer a cereal bar or bagel to bacon and eggs to get you going in the morning. 

You’re also a sensitive bunch too, with two-thirds of you claiming to be offended that other motorists consider van drivers to be aggressive on the road.

The majority claim to take pride in their vans, keeping them clean and tidy at all times.

And are often to be found foot tapping along to the gentle sounds of Radio 2’s greatest hits, rather than blasting out beats whilst cutting up other road users.

The Rise of White Van Woman

Last week, we reported on how dogs are becoming ever more ubiquitous in the passenger seat of white vans and taking on unpaid labour at the expense of your typical white van man.

If that isn’t bad enough, there’s more doom and gloom for your stereotypical WMV. 

While the reputation of the white van man is well known throughout the UK, it’s a fact that there is another force on the rise in our green and pleasant land.

White Van Woman is here, hear her roar! (Or at least hear her tell you to get your feet off the sodding table).

Back in 2017, a third of all vans were owned by women, but that was just the beginning.

Last year, the number of female van drivers surged by a whopping 52%, meaning that our trusty WMV could soon become an endangered species.

If that wasn’t bad enough, female van drivers pay less for their van insurance than men, sometimes by less than £1,000.

“What is fuelling the increase in white van women?” I hear you ask.

Next thing we’ll know, the van makers will be offering added extras of pink fluffy seats or leopard print consoles, with extra space for handbag storage. (We don’t know why we’re continuing with these gender stereotypes – Mrs CVI knows more about football than any of us do and could out-drink any of us here by a long chalk, here at CVI towers).

Whatever the reason, I guess it was realistically only a matter of time.

Van Drivers Gone Wild

First I gave you “Apocalypse CVI,” and now, I give you…”Van Drivers Gone Wild.” A plan for TV domination in 2019.

The formula is simple: We need to take advantage of the publicity from our TV advertisements, by getting on the box with our very own show.

I was thinking me and a documentary film crew could “tour” the country and go to different towns and cities. The show would air on Channel 5 prime time and would rival Can’t Pay Take It Away as the nations favourite…TV program.

“Van Drivers Gone Wild,” is the name, and 9pm on a Wednesday night is the game.

The first episode…

“Wet and Wild,”

The story of a white van man in Surrey who took off in the rain and went on a rampage. We show actual footage of the wild manoeuvrers that took place on the wet roads, and speak with key eye witnesses to the rampage.

Then, in the final part of the show we reach a climax as we enter the prison cell of the white van man and put him on camera, in a no holds barred interview that will shock and entertain at the same time.

I envision that wherever me and the CVI film crew go…we will always attract a huge crowd.

We could give out free CVI hats, free CVI t-shirts, and even…free money. This is reality TV after all, and the more you pay…the wilder it gets!

We could make it rain money, and get the good people of our nation to do all kinds of things in the name of Cheap Van Insurance.

When Van Drivers Gone Wild is established on Channel 5 and winning awards, I think a spin off product should immediately be commissioned to cash in on the craze.

I call it…

So the plan is to take the footage which is too hot to handle and put it on a DVD. Then buy advertising space on those late night commercials you see after midnight.

Just who is that man or woman behind the wheel of a Ford Transit these days? We know most of them use CVI…but who are they exactly?

Well, thanks to new research we have gained a better understanding of exactly who is driving up and down the roads of our nation.

You might think it is the stereotypical “white van man” such as a builder, painter, carpenter, delivery driver, or electrician, and you would be right, they are the foundation of the van economy and the main user of CVI.

However, the research does suggest the landscape of van driving is changing. For example, 14,000 vans are owned by housewives and house husbands and many are used for business and pleasure. Even to take the kids to school.

Do you want more numbers? How about the fact that 414 waiters in the UK own a van. Or how about the fact that professional knitters are now prime targets for the van companies who want to make a sale.

We can’t mention vans without talking about accidents can we? The most accident prone van drivers are plumbing and heating engineers. Sure, they are good with their plungers and they enjoy eating their iced buns, but when it comes to getting into fender benders they are right there at number 1.

Company directors follow up plumbers on the list of accident prone van drivers, followed by carpenters and then joiners.

The Summer of…White Van Women

Last week our chief news reporter told the truth about white van men. “The summer of scam,” he reported while on the road.

This week a new report landed on our desk here at CVI headquarters, and while our CNR continued to tour the country in the CVI limo and find out the latest news regarding white van men…we decided to push this news story regarding white van women forward.

The report started off with the quote – “Everyone has heard of the white van man, but now it’s the ladies turn.”

What are they basing this on? Well, according to official statistics there was 26,166 women who filled in a van insurance application form last year…compared to 17,198 in 2016.

Right now in 2018 we can only imagine how many women have already got their van insurance online.

Of course, many of them decided to compare van insurance for their white vans right here, at The Nations Favourite.

3 minutes is all any white van woman needs to get around 40 quotes from well known van insurance companies and brokers.

“There is no denying owning a van has many benefits, and it seems female drivers are starting to jump on the bandwagon,” was another quote we found in the report.

Reading on…we discovered that white women van drivers actually pay less than their white van men husbands and brothers…£181 less in fact, with an average quote of £1025 per year for coverage.

Perhaps more women are visiting CVI than men, and that is the main reason why they get cheaper van insurance? It wouldn’t surprise me one bit.

White Van “Night of Terror” in Hartlepool

A quiet night in Hartlepool soon led to a “night of terror” for one family. Who was to blame? Yes, you guessed it…the white van man.

Just when will they learn? Never, In my opinion.

Cheap Van Insurance enthusiasts will be well aware of how white van drivers have been attempting to make a new start for themselves in places such as Nevada and Siberia. That didn’t work out very well, and now…they are back on UK roads.

Such as this night in Hartlepool, where, at 1:45am in the morning the only sound was of the occasional milk float busy with a round of deliveries or those crafty but educated van thieves “tricking” their way into vans.

Then, all of a sudden, and without warning…a CRASH, and the sound of broken glass, and then it was all out WAR in that quiet Hartlepool neighbourhood.

A white van man war you must understand, where the van is the weapon, so to speak, and the only reason for battle is rage and discontent.

Actually, there is a bit more backstory to this particular incident, but to make a long story short it had something to do REVENGE.

That’s right. The driver of the white Ford transit van believed that his cousin was being treated badly by her boyfriend. So, instead of applying to be on the Jeremy Kyle show so they could battle it out on national television, he decided to take matters into his own hands and seek out a BATTLE on the streets of Hartlepool

The first act of battle was to crash into the Volkswagen Golf parked outside the house of the boyfriend. This was the sound of broken glass that woke everyone up.

In no time at all everyone in the house was outside in the front yard, still in their pyjamas, and then…the second act of battle…drive directly at everybody in front of you.

That is exactly what this particular white van driver did…he drove at the three people who were standing outside of the house and then pinned them up against the wall with his van.

One of those pinned up against the wall was the boyfriend of the van drivers cousin, and the other two were his mother and his friend.

A neighbour who witnessed all of this unfolding described the scene as “terrifying.”

Fortunately, it didn’t go any further, and the white van man cooled down enough to put his Ford transit in reverse and then drive off into the night.

Not surprisingly, the Police soon caught up with him, and then a few months later he had his day in court.

An 8 month suspended sentence is what he got for that night of terror, as well as a 2 year driving ban, a fine of £2500 and £340 costs.

Not only that, but the white van man, who already had van insurance costs of £5000 a year due to a previous conviction of drink driving, said that he expected to see his insurance costs hit £15,000 a year once back on the roads.

£15,000 is a lot, no doubt, but if you do the crime then you must pay the price.
