Unroadworthy Van Stopped By Police for Multiple Violations

Introduction

Van news…

Wilts Special Ops tweeted that #RPU stopped a van after the passenger failed to wear their seat belt…

Another issue was the driver using trade plates that expired in 2018.

The driver used the plates in an unauthorised manner.

The vehicle had no tax, MOT, or proper documentation.

Traffic Stop Made On Van For Serious Violation Of The Seatbelt Law

Last week, the Wiltshire RPU stopped a van for a serious traffic violation.

The passenger wasn’t wearing a seat belt, breaking the UK’s Road Traffic Act.

This law requires all passengers to wear seat belts when the vehicle is moving.

Wearing a seat belt is one of the best ways to protect yourself in a crash.

Driver found to be using expired trade plates in unauthorised manner

The van was operating on expired trade plates, which had expired in 2018.

In fact, trade plates are temporary registration plates.

Typically, dealers and manufacturers receive them for vehicles they transport, demonstrate, or test.

However, they are not intended for private use or conducting business.

Van Found To Be Unroadworthy

The situation grew even worse when officers discovered, in addition, that the van was unroadworthy.

The vehicle did not have any tax, MOT, or insurance, which is a clear indication that the vehicle is not roadworthy.

The MOT certificate is a legal requirement in the UK and confirms a vehicle has passed its annual safety inspection.

Drivers must also have valid tax and insurance to legally operate a vehicle on public roads.

Consequences For Driver And Vehicle Owner

These violations are extremely serious and can have severe consequences for both the driver and the vehicle’s owner.

The driver could face fines, points on their licence, or even criminal charges.

The authorities could penalise the vehicle’s owner for allowing it to operate without insurance, tax, or an MOT.

Legal Requirements For All Vehicles Including A Van On Public Roads

It’s important to remember that all vehicles, whether they are cars, vans, or lorries, must meet legal requirements in order to be operated on public roads.

This includes having a valid MOT, tax, and insurance.

Additionally, all occupants must wear seat belts while the vehicle is in motion.

Restrictions And Laws Regarding Trade Plates

Drivers should be aware of the restrictions and laws regarding trade plates.

These are not meant to be used for private or commercial purposes, and can only be used under specific circumstances.

In Conclusion

This news reminds all drivers and vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.

Make sure all legal requirements, like insurance, MOT, and tax, are in place.

Always check these before driving on the roads.

Introduction

Van drivers near disaster…

Accidents can happen to anyone.

Even the most experienced van drivers.

But here’s the thing…

Whether it’s a careless mistake by another road user or a simple error of judgment, the outcome can be unpredictable.

So, what happened?

This is exactly what happened to a van driver in Liverpool, where a kind stranger stepped in to lend a helping hand.

But wait, there’s more…

In this article, we’ll explore how a van driver narrowly avoided a much worse outcome and offer some essential driving tips to keep you and your van safe.

Ready to find out?

A Helping Hand: The Liverpool Incident

Recently, in Liverpool, a van driver was going about his usual day.

But what happened next?

He was delivering goods to various restaurants across the bustling city.

It seemed like any other day, but then…

Navigating through tight corners and heavy traffic, he found himself in a tricky situation.

Here’s what went wrong…

A car, irresponsibly parked at a corner, severely limited his visibility.

Things escalated quickly.

As the driver attempted to steer his Ford Transit around the poorly parked vehicle, a car suddenly emerged from a side street.

It cut across his path, giving him little time to react.

Now, here’s the kicker…

In an effort to avoid a collision, the van driver made a sudden maneuver.

He felt the van losing its balance.

Before he knew it, the vehicle was tipping over.

It gets worse…

With four tyres struggling to stay grounded, the van overturned in the middle of the street.

But amidst the chaos, help was at hand.

A kind passerby quickly rushed to the scene.

Guess what happened next?

They pulled the van’s door open while the driver scrambled to climb out.

Despite the shocking turn of events, the driver emerged unscathed—thanks to the quick thinking of his helper.

Why Proper Parking Matters

Now, let’s talk about the real issue here.

The Liverpool incident serves as a stark reminder of why parking in safe, visible spots is vital.

But here’s the problem…

Parking at corners or other dangerous areas is not only a risk to you.

It’s also a risk to other road users.

Here’s what you need to know…

Van drivers, often driving larger vehicles, can face blind spots and reduced visibility.

This makes it crucial to avoid areas that restrict a clear view of the road.

But that’s not all…

Parking in hazardous spots can lead to costly mistakes.

Want to know the real kicker?

With the cost of van insurance premiums rising due to the increase in accidents, it’s essential to be cautious.

The solution is simple.

Ensure you’re not caught out by poor parking habits that could lead to accidents, fines, and increased insurance costs.

The Van Overturns: A Lesson in Road Safety

Now, here’s something that might surprise you…

And that’s just the beginning.

Not only are overturned vans dangerous, but the damage can also be costly.

But here’s the silver lining…

In these situations, having the right insurance in place can save you from a financial nightmare.

It gets worse…

With accidents on the rise, especially in crowded urban areas, cheap van insurance that offers comprehensive coverage is more essential than ever.

Why is this so important?

Safe Driving: Common Sense Tips For Van Drivers

Accidents like the one in Liverpool are often preventable.

But did you know…

With some basic safety precautions and the right mindset, van drivers can significantly reduce their chances of being involved in a road incident.

Here’s what you need to do.

Here are some common-sense tips every van driver should keep in mind:

  1. Stay alert: Always be aware of your surroundings, particularly in urban areas with tight corners and high traffic.
  2. Drive defensively: Expect the unexpected from other drivers, and be prepared to react calmly.
  3. Avoid distractions: Keep your focus on the road, and avoid using your phone while driving.
  4. Park responsibly: Make sure you choose safe parking spots that won’t obstruct the view for other road users.

Remember, these small habits can make a big difference in road safety.

And here’s the best part…

They might even help keep your van insurance premiums low.

How Van Insurance Can Be Your Best Ally

When accidents happen, van insurance can be the one thing standing between you and a hefty financial burden.

Here’s what happened…

The Liverpool driver was fortunate to escape unharmed.

But let’s be real…

The damage to his van could have cost thousands.

But here’s the good news…

With a solid insurance policy, much of this can be covered.

And that’s not all…

Comprehensive cheap van insurance UK plans can cover not only damage to your vehicle.

They can also help with potential legal fees and third-party claims.

A Not-So-Happy Ending: Staffordshire’s Dangerous Roads

Now let’s shift gears.

In another incident, this time in Staffordshire, a van driver wasn’t so lucky.

Here’s the story…

Council workers were out doing their usual maintenance work, repairing and cleaning roadside gullies.

This is a crucial job, especially in areas prone to flooding.

But then something unexpected happened.

A van driver, towing a trailer, became impatient with the maintenance crew’s road signs and warnings.

Here’s where things took a turn.

Rather than wait, the van driver decided to ignore the warnings.

He mounted the pavement, dangerously driving around the workers, almost causing an accident.

And it gets worse…

The entire reckless event was caught on a dashcam, which captured the van driver’s dangerous behaviour.

Not surprisingly, this footage was handed over to the police.

This is the sort of incident that not only endangers lives but also leads to skyrocketing van insurance premiums.

Staffordshire council later revealed that this type of reckless behaviour is becoming alarmingly common.

Over the past year, they’ve recorded more than 500 incidents where road workers have been verbally abused, ignored, or endangered by drivers.

Let that sink in.

How Reckless Driving Increases Van Insurance Costs

Now, here’s the bottom line…

Reckless behaviour on the roads doesn’t just put lives at risk.

It also has a direct impact on the cost of van insurance.

But why is that?

Insurance companies view reckless driving as high-risk behaviour.

And what happens when insurers perceive higher risk?

You guessed it…

Premiums go up.

That’s right.

Incidents like the one in Staffordshire are exactly why we’ve seen such an increase in van insurance premiums across the UK.

If you drive recklessly, you’re not only putting others in danger.

You’re also making insurance more expensive for everyone else.

So, here’s what you can do.

Take extra care on the roads.

Be patient.

Follow the rules.

And most importantly, drive safely.

If you’re looking for the best deal on van insurance, now’s the time to act.

Find out why van insurance premiums are rising in 2024.

Be Considerate On The Roads: A Call To Action

Here’s the takeaway…

Being considerate on the roads is not just a courtesy—it’s a responsibility.

Van drivers, especially those working long hours or under pressure, can sometimes rush or take risks.

But here’s the thing…

Impatience and reckless behaviour lead to accidents.

And accidents drive up van insurance costs for everyone.

So what’s the solution?

Take your time.

Be patient with road workers, other drivers, and pedestrians.

Most importantly, ensure your van insurance policy is up to date.

Not only will this protect you in the event of an accident, but it could also save you money in the long run.

We really hope that you’re one of the more patient and considerate drivers on the busy roads of the UK.

Van That Took An Unbelievable Twist: A True Story of Adventure

We’re pretty sure everyone has seen movies where a van plays a starring role.

But have you noticed?

It’s usually a sinister black van, with blacked-out windows and FBI-type agents inside, watching houses or tailing someone.

Sound familiar?

But here’s a van story with a twist.

Well, sort of.

Van Life: Go And Live The Dream

Back in 2015, a young Australian man made a bold decision.

Why?

Because his life was crashing down around him.

Everything that could go wrong, did.

So, what did he do?

He left Australia behind and traveled to the USA to follow his dream—whatever that was at the time.

Here’s the kicker…

He wasn’t looking to sit behind a desk anymore.

Instead, he wanted to live life to the fullest.

What did that look like?

  • Skydiving.
  • Windsurfing.
  • Music festivals.

But there was just one problem…

He wasn’t too keen on the whole camping-in-a-tent idea.

So, what did he do next?

He bought an old white van.

Yes, a beat-up, well-worn, and slightly dodgy-looking van.

Van Painted With “Free Candy”

Rather than shy away from the van’s questionable look, he decided to lean into it.

And here’s the wild part…

He painted “free candy” in big, red letters along the side of the van.

Want to know the weirdest part?

He even dipped his hands in red paint and smeared his handprints all over the van—inside and out.

You can probably guess what happened next, right?

It didn’t take long for the van to attract attention.

But not just from curious locals.

The police were on to him too.

Here’s the real surprise…

The police stopped him eight times in total.

Oh, and when a friend borrowed the van for a few weeks?

They got stopped seven times.

At least we know the police were on high alert!

But did they get any free candy?

We’re not sure about that, but the young Australian certainly stocked up—spending over $1,500 on sweets to complete the look!

A Happy Ending

Here’s the part we love…

During his travels, he met his future girlfriend while driving the infamous “free candy” van.

Now, after everything had fallen apart back in Australia—including his relationships—this was quite the happy turn of events!

Surprised?

His girlfriend was a little shocked by the van too, but after the initial surprise, she accepted a ride home in it.

And guess what?

The rest, as they say, is history.

A year later, they were still together, and they decided to sell the van (along with the candy stockpile) when it was time to return to Australia.

Ah, who doesn’t love a happy ending?

Van Driver With No Insurance Crashes Into Patrol Vehical

Patrol vehicle attempts to slow traffic

Impatient van driver…

As can often be the case, we see patrol vehicles on our highways slowing traffic due to a variety of reasons.

It may be an accident up ahead, it may be that emergency repairs need to take place.

Obviously, it would be difficult and dangerous without slowing traffic right down.

This is precisely what happened on the M6 in June this year.

A patrol vehicle was successfully slowing traffic with signs indicating that the workforce was on the road.

A Red X to indicate a lane closure, and slower speeds in other open lanes.

Unfortunately, there was a rather irate and impatient van driver behind the patrol vehicle.

Instead of doing what everyone else was doing (slowing down),

he decided he would rather crash into the patrol vehicle to try and avoid the temporary road works and slow traffic.

It Didn’t End Well For The Driver

Nor, we suspect, the ending he had hoped for either.

He appeared in court and paid court costs and compensation of just over £500.

In addition, the court banned the driver from driving for a year and ordered him to complete 200 hours of community service.

Oh yes, and not to forget a 19 day rehabilitation activity requirement.

This is usually a requirement to reduce the prospect of reoffending.

Let’s hope the driver learns a lesson and reflects on this experience while completing community service.

Just so that you are all aware, it is an offence to drive in a lane with the Red X and has been for more than 20 years now.

Authorities installed cameras to detect drivers who ignore the Red X, which can result in a fixed penalty and 3 points on your licence.

And In Other Van News

Police stopped a van driver on suspicion of using cloned number plates.

They later found the plates were genuine.

But,

The van driver didn’t have insurance or even a licence.

It was also discovered that he had been driving around like this for many years.

On the same day,

not far away,

another van was stopped and it was found that there was no valid MOT and the driver had no licence.

Once again, it had been that way for quite a while.

These are just a few reasons to make sure everything is up to date.

You can do this by checking you have the best and cheapest van insurance quotes for your van.

Van Driver Fails You Won’t Believe: Stuck in Sand and Under Bridges

Stuck In The Middle With You

Well, actually, it was more like stuck in the sand for one unlucky AA van driver.

The call seemed straightforward: rescue a stranded van and driver at Porth Beach in Newquay.

But things didn’t go as planned.

The AA van itself got stuck in the sand.

Locals quickly jumped into action.

They worked alongside the AA driver to free both vehicles.

We can only assume the original stranded driver joined the efforts too.

It took nearly an hour to free both vehicles.

But this wasn’t an isolated incident.

It’s not the first time the AA has ended up stuck while responding to a rescue.

On a previous occasion, even a tow truck was required to save both vehicles.

Why Does This Keep Happening?

Over Easter, a Transporter van and a Mazda car met the same sandy fate.

The story doesn’t end there.

Just down the road at Great Western Beach, it’s a regular occurrence.

In the past year, more than a dozen cars have needed rescue from the sand.

Why Are People Driving Onto The Beach?

It’s a good question.

Maybe they didn’t feel like walking.

Hopefully, they’ll think twice before trying it again.

Bridge Over Troubled Water

Now, let’s talk about another kind of stuck.

One unfortunate van driver found themselves in a different predicament.

Not in the sand this time.

But wedged under a bridge.

The road had to be closed.

Despite numerous warnings about the low bridge, the van became firmly lodged.

How Could This Happen?

Above the bridge, there’s bright yellow writing.

It clearly states LOW BRIDGE.

There are also multiple signs alerting drivers to the height restriction.

Yet bridge strikes still happen.

Didn’t They See The Signs?

Some drivers seem to think they can squeeze through.

Or maybe they just don’t notice the warnings.

Reality hits fast.

A van measuring 7’3” simply won’t fit under a 7-foot bridge.

What happens next?

Deflating the tyres is often the only way to get unstuck.

That’s four flat tyres.

If you’re lucky, it might work.

But maybe, just maybe, it’s time to pay more attention to those signs.

Better check your insurance to see if it covers getting stuck in unusual places then.

Luckily for you, it won’t take long at all with our quick 3-minute form.

Let’s Get Some Electric Over Here

Ford’s Electric Van Revolution

Pardon me? An all-electric van?

Who would’ve thought it!

Yet, that’s exactly what Ford has developed.

It’s set to replace Britain’s most popular vehicle, the Ford Transit Van.

Efforts to improve the EV (electric vehicle) market are accelerating.

As we know, progress had to start somewhere.

One small step for cars, one giant leap for vans.

The noisy old Transits will soon be a thing of the past.

New electric models will replace older versions.

Why?

Because manufacturers must meet stricter air quality and emissions standards.

They don’t stop working to improve this.

Thankfully, the results are impressive.

What Is Ford Doing Now?

Ford plans to introduce four new commercial vans by 2024.

However, they know not everyone can switch to electric right away.

Still, the benefits are undeniable.

Running costs for electric vans are significantly lower than diesel models.

The E-Transit, Ford’s flagship electric van, offers a 196-mile range.

That’s enough to get from A to B—and then on to C: the charging station.

Worried about finding a charging point?

The UK now has over 42,000 charge connectors in more than 15,000 locations.

This is a 35% increase since last year.

The chance of running out of power is slim.

But keep in mind, battery size affects range for some models.

What Has Changed?

From the outside, the Transit Van looks the same.

Some designs are best left untouched.

But under the bonnet, the changes are significant.

Inside, the upgrades are modern and efficient.

Ford isn’t the only one innovating.

Competitors like Fiat, Renault, Citroën, Peugeot, and Vauxhall have launched their own electric vans.

There’s no shortage of options if you’re considering buying or upgrading.

What About Insurance?

Insurance costs for electric vans can vary.

Do your homework to find the best deal.

Whether you’re buying new or renewing, research is key.

A little effort can save a lot of money.

So, is it time to go electric?

With Ford’s E-Transit leading the charge, the future of vans looks bright.

See how much you could save with us on cheap van insurance deals.

Get started by filling out our 3-minute form.

Yes, really, just 3 minutes is all it will take! What are you waiting for?

Roadside Revelations: The Cornwall Incident And The Van Insurance Mix-Up

Van Insurance…

Okay, we realise how silly the title of this week’s blog post sounds.

But dear readers, we simply could not resist reporting on this story from Cornwall that took place a few days ago.

Enjoy…

Some scenes may have been dramatised for effect.

I’m feeling good: Scene 1

Imagine the setting:

You’re driving along a picturesque Cornwall road.

Meanwhile, the landscape unfolds beautifully around you.

The weather is lovely, and you’re looking forward to having an ice cream later.

But wait!

A copper is signaling for you to pull over.

What could possibly have gone wrong, eh?

However, it appears there is indeed a valid reason for this unexpected stop.

As you signal to pull up by the kerb, you think of the best excuse you can muster because you know exactly what the police are about to ask for.

You ensure your poker face gives nothing away.

Actions speak louder than words: Scene 2

“So fella, we can’t seem to find any insurance on your van.

Can you explain that?”

Words fail you, despite having tried desperately to come up with a palpable excuse.

Several reasons flit through your mind, but none of them suffice.

Consequently, there is only one option left.

You’re going to have to resort to using a technicality.

“Well sir, I have received a van insurance quote.

Surely that’s valid?”

You flutter your eyelashes, hoping with all your might that you look as cute as your neighbour Marge’s new puppy.

Unfortunately, and predictably, it doesn’t work.

Even though you’re a company director.

This is outrageous.

The audacity!

How dare anyone question the status of your van insurance?

Technicalities don’t prosper: End scene

You can imagine this tale doesn’t end well, and you would be right.

The van was seized.

Contrary to popular belief (or not), simply having a quote for insurance, doesn’t actually mean you’re insured.

We know, we were amazed to find this out, too.

(Just kidding – we’d be awful at our jobs if that was the case).

What this poor fella needed was 3 minutes of his time to fill out our form.

He would have then received several cheap van insurance quotes from reputable providers.

His next step would have been to, of course, actually proceed with taking out and arranging payment for a policy.

Don’t be like this guy, and save on your van insurance costs with us.

Otherwise, you may find your own sorry tale playing out.

Police In Bristol Disappointed By Surprise Van Checks

Surprise Van Checks

Worried about the condition of your van?

You should be.

You never know when the police will pull you over for checks.

Especially as some commercial van drivers recently found out the hard way.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, as well as the police, spent a Thursday in Bristol last week inspecting commercial vehicles.

The checks took place at Memorial Stadium, in the Bristol Rover football team’s car park.

Unfortunately, the results were disappointing.

They found that out of 39 vans, only 6 were clean and not breaking any laws.

A whopping 80% had some sort of illegal defects.

The worst past?

Over 50% were in such bad condition that authorities immediately ordered them off the road.

What were the reasons for being considered unsatisfactory?

There were a few, some of which were particularly terrible, actually:

Faults and/or defects that violated regulations.

(22 were so dangerous that authorities immediately demanded their removal from the road.)

A van was found to be carrying too much weight, which we all know from previous blog posts is actually illegal.

The aforementioned van was also carrying dairy items that were unrefrigerated, resulting in a swift call and immediate seizure by Environmental Health.

Another van carried a load that wasn’t properly secured.

Two vans didn’t have tax and four lacked an up-to-date MOT.

Eight possessed bald tyres.

Two vans were genuinely leaking fuel.

Authorities caught another van using the now-banned red diesel.

What was most shocking was the calibre of van drivers, and not just the vans.

Get a load of this:

One particularly naughty van driver has cannabis on him.

Four drivers had absolutely no van insurance.

They obviously hadn’t heard of this site – we’re sure if they knew they could easily get cheap van insurance, they wouldn’t have got caught

Two van drivers just simply didn’t have licences

Authorities found three of them using their phones.

Whilst we’d hope no van driver reading this was caught or is guilty of one of the above points, we are here for you.

Especially when it comes to cheap van insurance.

Greggs Strike Drama: Why Delivery Drivers Are Taking A Stand

There have been a few battles in our blog posts last year, from e-scooters to ice cream vans, from delivery drivers to the sea.

However, today we report on delivery drivers taking a stand against companies that haven’t been doing the best they can do for their vital staff members.

If Greggs is one of your favourite breakfast or lunchtime places to grab a bite to eat (their iced ring doughnuts are divine, and the sausage rolls aren’t half bad either), you may want to reconsider after reading this.

Why are delivery drivers striking?

Over in South Yorkshire (Sheffield to be precise, just in case you were wondering, duck),

delivery drivers have been striking for nearly 3 months outside a Greggs.

The reason?

Something we’re sure everyone has become familiar with at least once in their lives.

Two dreaded words: Pay cuts.

However, there is more to the story, and it isn’t just Greggs who are to blame here.

We should really be pointing our fingers at a company named Stuart.

Who is Stuart?

Stuart isn’t a person who we should solely be directing our anger at.

In fact, Stuart is a logistics company working (under DPD) for the famous takeaway site,

Just Eat.

What did Stuart do?

Well, what didn’t he do?

Last year (November), the company initiated a new pay structure.

This new implementation of pay doesn’t quite have delivery driver’s best interests in mind.

Hmm, we wonder who it best suits?

Greggs is targeting Sheffield in hopes that the strike will gain attention.

In fact, this has been quite the tenacious gig economy strike, making it the longest in Brit history.

We’ve seen reports of strikes over in Mansfield and Ashfield, Worcester, Kent (Farnborough) and Derbyshire.

We’re sure there are more, too.

When you consider the rising costs of living – fuel being especially significant here, we’re with our fellow delivery drivers.

I’m a delivery driver – how can I save some pennies?

Whilst we can’t instigate a new pay structure for Just Eat, we can offer some pretty impressive cheap van insurance deals.

Interested?

Get start started by filling out our 3-minute form, and you can thank us later.

Red Diesel Crackdown: What Every Driver Needs to Know Now

With the ban on red diesel coming into effect in April, some countries have been setting up stop points to check on vehicles that shouldn’t be using it.

So far, authorities have set up stop checks in:

  • England
  • Ireland
  • Australia

Know of any others?

If so, please let us know!

Why Are Governments Checking Vehicles For Red Diesel?

From April, only vehicles that don’t require road use will be able to use red diesel.

That mainly covers sectors such as agriculture, fishing, forestry or horticulture.

You can check the full list of allowances and changes on the government website, right here.

However, unless you’re living under a rock, it has been impossible to avoid the news about the soaring costs of fuel.

Whilst this is a global problem, some countries have feared that motorists will illegally be using red diesel.

The government in England loses money when this occurs, so they add a red dye (hence the term red diesel) to mark the fuel clearly.

This marking makes it easy for authorities to catch drivers misusing it, especially during stops at RSA checkpoints.

What’s The Craic?

In Ireland, certain rules for this diesel have been in place since the 1960s.

They also use a green dye to identify the fuel.

Authorities randomly check fuel (called ‘dipping’) to identify whether drivers are using the correct diesel based on its colour.

The penalties in Ireland are also a lot stricter and harsher than in the UK, so you’re not going to want to be found guilty of this.

Very recently, a video of an Irish van driver in a Renault Master went viral.

If you haven’t seen it, let us provide a chuckle amidst the havoc of increasing costs.

The driver of this particular fully electric Renault Master still faced a fuel check during the stop.

You can watch the video of the start of the interaction on Facebook, linked right here.

Not the smartest move there from the authorities in charge of the checks, but we appreciate the laugh.
