Unfortunately, there was a rather irate and impatient van driver behind the patrol vehicle.

Instead of doing what everyone else was doing (slowing down),

he decided he would rather crash into the patrol vehicle to try and avoid the temporary road works and slow traffic.

It Didn’t End Well For The Driver

Nor, we suspect, the ending he had hoped for either.

He appeared in court and paid court costs and compensation of just over £500.

In addition, the court banned the driver from driving for a year and ordered him to complete 200 hours of community service.

Oh yes, and not to forget a 19 day rehabilitation activity requirement.

This is usually a requirement to reduce the prospect of reoffending.

Let’s hope the driver learns a lesson and reflects on this experience while completing community service.

Just so that you are all aware, it is an offence to drive in a lane with the Red X and has been for more than 20 years now.

Authorities installed cameras to detect drivers who ignore the Red X, which can result in a fixed penalty and 3 points on your licence.

And In Other Van News

Police stopped a van driver on suspicion of using cloned number plates.

They later found the plates were genuine.

But,

The van driver didn’t have insurance or even a licence.

It was also discovered that he had been driving around like this for many years.

On the same day,

not far away,

another van was stopped and it was found that there was no valid MOT and the driver had no licence.

Once again, it had been that way for quite a while.

This week brings a strange story

Apparently, a Volkswagen Transport van driver decided to experiment with lasers (and his van).

As a result, his actions have cost him dearly.

In fact, we’re talking a whopping £3,000. And that’s just the start of the punishments…

Genius, Or Just Downright Silly?

Mr. Jason Moore of Swansea has been convicted of something that many of us didn’t even think was possible.

Have you ever heard of a laser jamming device?

Well, it turns out Mr. Moore has.

Additionally, he attached one of these laser jammer devices to his Volkswagen Transport van.

You may be asking why on earth anyone would ever want to do that.

Well, this is where it gets interesting.

Mr Moore decided to attach the laser for one simple reason: to avoid speeding cameras. Genius? Or silly?

Now, it’s not like Mr Moore was travelling down the motorway at 90 miles per hour or anything.

In fact, he was driving 12 miles per hour above the speed limit.

However, that speed is enough to endanger other motorists on the road as well as himself.

Driving without due care and attention, perhaps?

Caught Red-Handed

The laser device interferes with cameras’ ability to pick up and read a vehicle’s speed.

Unfortunately for Jason, videos captured the flashing jammer device in action.

Along with error texts when they tried to read the speed of his moving van.

Mr. Moore, thinking he’d gain 15 extra minutes of sleep by dodging speeding fines, got caught.

The court accused him of perverting the course of justice and ordered him to follow a 2-month curfew.

If that wasn’t enough, he will be facing a sentence of 32 weeks of custody (although this has been suspended for a couple of years).

Well, at least he somehow managed to avoid prison, hm?

And so, van drivers (and motorist drivers alike) are taught a valuable lesson.

Tragically, in 28 of these, death was the result for some people.

Perhaps this is an excellent time for the government to put these proposals into action, especially with recent campaigns gaining so much support.

Yes, van drivers, we’re talking about you. You may well hate your job right now, being forced out to the frontline, doing work you don’t want to do in a climate that is beyond surreal. But go, in the knowledge that the general public not only need you more than ever, but have a new-found respect for you that they would never have had, unless the events of the last few months happened.

You are the essential connectors for so many people right now – the elderly and vulnerable. Between friends and families sending gifts in the absence of their presence. Of people who would otherwise not be able to go out and get food. For supermarkets which would have no food without you. Hospitals that need vital equipment. Whatever you’re delivering, just know, that someone, somewhere is grateful for you right now. 

It’s a time of clarity for us all. A time where the glaring inequality between van drivers who won’t get paid more than SSP if they do self-isolate, while many sit at home getting 80% of a decent salary for doing nothing at all. Seeing the ones who have money get everything they want delivered to their doorstep, while those who don’t struggle to get what they need. The roads are quiet but there’s no joy in a fast drop-off when there’s a never-ending stream to deliver and you’re not sure if you’re just feeling exhausted or something worse. And no feeling grateful that ‘at least you’ve got a job,’ when any one of those drop-offs could affect not only you, but your family at home in ways you’d rather not think about. 

These are dark times and there’s nothing more we can say to cheer you along, besides that the majority of us recognise that every day you’re out there, getting things done, because that’s what you do. And for that, we thank you.
